Smithfield Foods earnings slump in quarter

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Smithfield Foods Inc. said Thursday that second-quarter earnings fell to $4.2 million, or 3 cents a share, compared to $17.4 million, or 13 cents, in the same period a year ago. Current results include a loss from continuing operations of $30.0 million, or 21 cents a share. Sales were $3.15 billion compared to $2.75 billion. Analysts polled by FactSet Research estimated, on average, a loss per share of 7 cents and sales of $3.17 billion.
